I’m so happy about this DIY because it means the sun is finally out and we need sunscreen! Last summer we bought a sunscreen bottle with a carabiner that I clipped to my purse. It lasted all summer and was pretty much the best invention ever.
We never forgot sunscreen again and we could re-apply on the go without having to dig around in my purse. This summer, I lost the handy travel sunscreen so I wanted to recreate it. Since I love macrame so much I created this cute and cheap DIY macrame sunscreen holder but you can use it to carry hand sanitizer or lotion too.
+ String
+ Carabiner
+ Sunscreen
+ Small empty bottle
+ Tape
+ Scissors
+ Candle
1. Cut 5 pieces of string about 20″ long.
2. Fold in half and tie one big knit in the middle. Tape the knot down to keep it in place.
3. Group the string into 5 pairs and knot each pair about 1″ down. Now another 1″ down, take one string and knot it with the string from the pair next to it.
4. Continue this for about 4 rows of knots or to cover the length of your bottle. Slide your bottle in to check the fit and number of knots needed. I put the bottle in cap side down for easy use.
5. Once the fit is right, tie a big knot with all the strands to hold the bottle in place.
6. Over a candle, place each piece of string over the heat to melt the ends and prevent fraying.
7. To finish off, attach a carabiner (or keyring) to the top knot and attach to your purse.
The travel size bottle was enough for us all summer last year but you can refill as needed. Now when you need a little sunscreen touch up, you won’t have to dig around your purse. Happy summer!

What a great idea! I haven’t done macrame since the 60’s but I can probably sew up a pouch for the swim tote. I love your blog. Thanks for sharing.
