I love soft, fun throw pillows that add a little pop to a room. But when I set out to find pillows for our couch, that both fit my style and my price range, it was nearly impossible. So I DIY-ed it with two pillows with removable covers and dug out my linocut tools.
Linocut is a printmaking technique and a super easy way to stamp things. Unlike other similar methods (i.e: potato stamping), you can create intricate patterns on lino blocks and reuse your stamp forever!
For my pillows, I chose a fun pattern seen everywhere – a + sign and then found an amazing cactus print that I had to recreate from Babs at Patchwork Cactus.
Materials:
+ Rubber brayer
+ Fabric ink
+ Linocut
+ Carver tool
+ Zipper
+ Fabric (I used raw canvas and a white tablecloth)
Directions
- Choose a simple shape that is easy to carve out. Sketch it out on your lino block and get to carving!
- Apply fabric ink to the stamp with the rubber brayer. Practise on a section of the same cloth to get the hang of it – how much ink to apply might vary by texture and absorption of fabric.
- Stamp in any arrangement. You can freehand it like me or use tape to create a grid.
- Let the ink dry before you sew the pillow cover.
